Separating  FACT  from FICTION

FICTION

Ling Ling claims that Josh Newman “supports a government takeover of healthcare, including requiring the government to choose your doctor and how often you see them.”

FACT

This is actually one of the more ridiculous lies Ling Ling has been pushing lately.  Not only was Josh Newman’s father a doctor, Josh is supported by nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers because of his longstanding commitment to ensuring that access to quality and affordable healthcare is available for every Californian. While Josh supports greater funding for our critical healthcare services, he absolutely does not, in any way, support a government takeover of the healthcare system.

Ling Ling is lying about Josh's healthcare record to distract from her failed one.  Budgets are a statement of values, and after Ling Ling's repeated votes to cut critical public health funding, she clearly does not value our health and safety.

FICTION

Ling Ling claims that Josh Newman wants to “blow up Prop 13 and raise property taxes by billions.”

FACT

Josh Newman does NOT support increasing property taxes, nor does he support any changes to Proposition 13, especially any change that would price California’s seniors out of their homes. The real truth is that as our representative in Sacramento, Josh Newman was a careful steward of taxpayer dollars and a staunch defender of the interests of homeowners and seniors.

FACT

With the state and federal government failing for decades to ensure sufficient infrastructure funding, in 2017 California lawmakers were forced to step up and find new ways to raise revenue for critical repairs.  Josh was one of 81 legislators across the California State Senate and Assembly who made the difficult choice to invest in the state’s infrastructure to guarantee safety and provide a foundation for California’s continued economic growth.  Of those 81 legislators (54 in the Assembly and 27 in the Senate) if 80 were Democrats and one was a Republican, who would you say was the deciding vote?

More importantly, it was Josh Newman who acted to protect the interests of taxpayers in the wake of the passage of the Gas Tax.  Josh was the principal author of SCA2/ACA5, which became Proposition 69, the “Lockbox” amendment on the June 2018 state ballot. Once passed, it has ensured that all revenues generated from SB-1 cannot be diverted and may only be used for their intended transportation-related purposes.

FICTION

Ling Ling claims that Josh Newman “cast the deciding vote to raise gas and car taxes by $52 billion” and “wasted millions studying a new tax which could lead to drivers being charged by the mile, billions in new taxes and meters on our cars to tell the government how far we drive.”

FICTION

Ling Ling claims that Josh Newman “wasted $300,000 tax dollars on a failed power grab to protect himself and corrupt politicians from recall elections.”

FACT

The recall itself was corrupt-- corporate polluters and other special interests poured millions of dollars into recalling Josh Newman not because he was the deciding vote on the Gas Tax (see above), but because it gave them an awesome opportunity for a “re-do” of a very close election they lost fair and square, and on terms that would be much more favorable to their interests.   Their recall campaign against Josh was so nakedly partisan and self-serving that the LA Times and other newspapers called it an "abuse of the ballot box."   All those tax dollars spent on the recall election were actually the direct result of their own power grab, and unfortunately for the residents of SD-29 and the spirit of good government, it worked.

FICTION

Ling Ling claims that Josh Newman “didn’t push to manufacture essential pharmaceuticals in the U.S."

FACT

This actually falls into the category of “Huh, what?”  This particular Ling Ling lie appears to be her attempt to distract from the fact that she has received generous campaign contributions from Big Pharma and the dialysis industry, and has in return consistently voted in support of their interests in the State Senate.

Another important truth is that it was Ling Ling who voted against lowering out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs and voted against critical public health funding that would have helped Orange, Los Angeles, and San Bernardino Counties respond effectively to COVID-19.
